What Lipovitan D is

Lipovitan D is a 100 ml brown-glass-bottle energy beverage manufactured by Taisho Pharmaceutical. Each bottle contains 1,000 mg taurine, 50 mg inositol, a B-vitamin complex (niacin 20 mg as nicotinamide, B₁ 5 mg, B₂ 5 mg, B₆ 5 mg), and 50 mg caffeine. It is the original ancestor of the modern energy-drink category — predating Red Bull by nearly 25 years — and remains one of the highest-selling functional beverages in Japan with over 10 billion bottles sold cumulatively since launch. We ship the standard Japanese 10-bottle retail pack.

Where it sits in Japan

Lipovitan D is woven into Japanese workplace culture in a way no Western energy drink matches. The TV commercial tagline "ファイト一発!" ("Fight, ippatsu!" — roughly "Let's go, one shot!") has been used by Taisho since the 1960s and is instantly recognizable to anyone who grew up watching Japanese TV. It's stocked in every konbini, every station kiosk, every hotel vending machine, every office-building snack corner. The salaryman-at-3pm demographic is real, but so is the construction-worker-at-5am demographic, the student-cramming-for-exams demographic, and the marathon-runner-at-the-finish-line demographic. The brown glass bottle is deliberately medical-adjacent — it signals "functional beverage" rather than "fun drink."

Inside the bottle

Per 100 ml bottle: taurine 1,000 mg, inositol 50 mg, nicotinamide (niacin, B₃) 20 mg, thiamine nitrate (B₁) 5 mg, riboflavin phosphate (B₂) 5 mg, pyridoxine HCl (B₆) 5 mg, caffeine 50 mg. Taurine is the flagship ingredient and the reason the bottle earns its category — 1,000 mg is a clinically meaningful dose for a single serving, and Taisho was the first mass-market producer to use it at that level in a ready-to-drink format. The 50 mg caffeine is moderate — roughly half a cup of coffee, or the same as Red Bull's 80 mg dialed down. Excipients: sugar, D-sorbitol, citric acid (acidulant), sodium benzoate (preservative), natural flavoring, glycerin, water.

About Taisho Pharmaceutical

Taisho Pharmaceutical was founded in 1912 in Tokyo and is one of Japan's largest OTC pharmaceutical companies, with a portfolio that includes Pabron (cold medicine — the category leader in Japan), Naron (muscle pain relief), and the entire Lipovitan range (D, Fine, and the Zero variant). The company trades on the Tokyo Stock Exchange. Lipovitan D itself launched in 1962 and has been continuously manufactured at Taisho's Japan plants ever since — the recipe has been updated once (the switch from liver extract to taurine in the 1970s) but the core positioning hasn't changed in 60+ years.

How we source and ship it

The 10-bottle glass-bottle pack is our heaviest SKU by freight weight, so we consolidate carefully at the Osaka forwarder and use cold-chain air freight to LAX to maintain temperature stability for the vitamin B content (some B vitamins degrade in warm conditions). A small English supplement-facts overlabel is added at our US 3PL; the original Japanese label with lot code and best-before date remains visible.

What this product is not

Lipovitan D is classified as a functional beverage in the US. It is not a drug, has not been approved or evaluated by the FDA, and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. Contains 50 mg of caffeine per bottle. Contains sodium benzoate as a preservative. Not recommended for people sensitive to caffeine, pregnant or nursing persons, anyone under 20, or individuals with hypertension, heart conditions, or caffeine-drug interactions. Consult a healthcare professional before use if you have any medical condition or take medication.

Questions about Lipovitan D

Is Lipovitan D the same as Red Bull?
No. Lipovitan D predates Red Bull by 25 years. They share a category (taurine-based energy beverages) but Lipovitan uses 1,000 mg taurine + 50 mg caffeine in a 100 ml bottle, versus Red Bull's 1,000 mg taurine + 80 mg caffeine in a 250 ml can. Lipovitan's format is smaller, stronger per-ml, not carbonated, and positioned as a functional drink rather than a lifestyle drink.
How much caffeine is in a bottle?
50 mg. For reference: a typical cup of brewed coffee has 80–100 mg; a Red Bull can has 80 mg; a Starbucks 16oz americano has 225 mg.
Can I drink more than one bottle a day?
The Japanese product label advises one bottle per day. Stacking multiple doses means compounding both the caffeine load and the vitamin dose. We don't recommend exceeding label guidance without a healthcare professional's input.
What's "Fight, ippatsu!"?
It's Taisho's advertising tagline for Lipovitan D since the 1960s — "ファイト一発!" loosely translates to "One shot — let's go!" The campaigns historically featured athletes and construction workers; they're a fixture of Japanese television and part of why the brand is so recognizable in Japan.
Does it taste the same as the Japanese version?
Yes — it is the Japanese version. We don't sell a US reformulation. The formula, flavor, and bottle are exactly what's sold in Japan, with only an English supplement-facts overlabel added at our US 3PL.
Is glass shipping safe?
The retail pack uses protective insert cardboard between bottles, and our 3PL double-boxes the full pack for US shipping. In over a decade of Japanese konbini distribution we've seen essentially zero breakage; we're insured for any that does happen.
Is this suitable for vegetarians or vegans?
The current formulation (post-1970s) uses synthetic taurine, not the original liver-derived taurine. Technically the formula is vegetarian and vegan, but Lipovitan is not independently certified as such. If you avoid animal-derived ingredients, we suggest contacting Taisho Pharmaceutical directly for the most current manufacturing details.
Why a 10-bottle pack?
It's the standard Japanese retail box. Singles are sold in konbini; the drugstore pack comes as 10. We don't break packs.
